Lighting the Legacy: I & Y Construction Retrofitting Adamson Stadium with Modern LED Technology

In April 2025, I & Y Construction had the privilege of contributing to the ongoing legacy of Adamson Stadium, located on the campus of Pennsylvania Western University – California (formerly California University of Pennsylvania). Between April 21st and April 24th, 2025, our team completed a full stadium lighting retrofit, transforming the historic venue’s lighting system with cutting-edge MUSCO Sports Lighting LED TLC fixtures.

Preserving Tradition While Advancing Technology

Adamson Stadium has been a centerpiece of Cal U athletics since its opening in 1971, serving as the home field for the Vulcans football team and hosting countless Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchups, championship games, and community events. Over the years, the venue has seen several updates, but the lighting upgrade marks one of the most impactful modernizations to date—combining energy efficiency, precision illumination, and reduced maintenance demands while preserving the stadium’s familiar atmosphere.

The Retrofit Process

The project involved removing outdated sports lighting fixtures and replacing them with MUSCO’s state-of-the-art TLC for LED series, known for delivering superior light quality, instant on/off capabilities, and significant energy savings.

I & Y Construction utilized the stadium’s existing infrastructure foundations and built—three 110-foot Musco sports lighting poles and three 70-foot Musco sports lighting poles—which were carefully evaluated, and prepared to support the new LED assemblies. Our experienced installation crew coordinated closely with MUSCO engineers to ensure proper alignment, aiming, and balance for optimal field coverage and minimal light spill.

Precision Installation, Trusted Execution

Operating within a tight timeline, the I & Y Construction team completed the retrofit safely and efficiently over the course of four days. Each phase of the project—from fixture and pole removal and pole install, to LED mounting and system testing—was executed with meticulous attention to detail. The result is a brighter, more uniform field lighting system that enhances visibility for players, officials, and fans alike while dramatically improving energy performance.

The new lighting system not only supports the Vulcans’ competitive edge but also strengthens the stadium’s role as a community hub for evening events, high school playoffs, and regional gatherings. With MUSCO’s TLC for LED technology, Adamson Stadium now meets professional-grade lighting standards while reducing energy use and maintenance costs for years to come.
